Download newest version of Wordpress: 2.9.1 Released

WordPress is the best blogging platform and has released 2.9.1 the latest upgrade to its current version 2.9. They have released the earlier version on December 25th and took 20 days to fix the bugs raised in last stable version.

Although Wordpress 2.9 came out with loads of new features like inbuilt image editor it also came out with equal no of bugs in it. There were about 17 bugs raised at bug tracker codex which includes Missed Schedule error for posts. So being very important security update it is recommended for all who were running wordpress blogs to upgrade to the latest version. Best Plugins for Wordpress to Optimize Your Website

Depending on the type of blog you run, there might come a point where you decide to try and earn some revenue from your traffic. Determining exactly when that time is, however, can be difficult. Some bloggers advocate that you wait until your userbase is solid before trying to monetize your articles while others recommend monetizing right away, so you don’t alienate your readers while trying to do it down the road. It’s a tough decision to make and can literally make or break a young blog… They are useful for SEO.

I generally tend to fall on the side of the latter category. While I definitely see the logic behind waiting for your readership to solidify, as a reader myself of many blogs, I would personally rather see the site the author intends from the first day. Readers are creatures of habit. The way your site looks the first day they visit is what they expect for the most part every day. If your site has ads then, they won’t be put off as you tinker around and find what works best.

Previously at Bookmark Bliss, we’ve talked about some of the Wordpress plugins in use on our site and even some of the changes we’ve made to our plugin lineup. As we’ve progressed the last few months, I’ve also been looking at a lot of tools to help monetize a site and basically make the job easy on our end to test out exactly what works best.

Here are 5 Wordpress Plugins we’ve come across that can help you to monetize your blog:

Adsense-Deluxe

If your site makes use of Google’s Adsense advertising, Adsense-Deluxe is the perfect plugin to help you manage things easily. In fact, it works well with almost any advertising package including Yahoo Ads. The Adsense-Deluxe plugin is smart and knows the rules of Google’s terms of service which helps you ensure your site is always compliant. Adsense-Deluxe will even limit the number of ads shown on a single page at one time to make sure you never exceed Google’s limit of 3. All Adsense ads here on our site are displayed using this plugin.

WP-Ads

WP-Ads is a simple little plugin that allows you to create regions on your site and display ads in those regions with a simple PHP call. Bookmark Bliss currently uses this plugin to display our graphical banner at the top of the page, as well as the square graphic at the top of the black sidebar. It tracks how many times your ad has been displayed and even offers the ability to rotate ads with different frequency. A great, simple tool that can make changing your ads a simple task.

Text-Link-Ads Widget (download after signing up)

Text-Link-Ads is one of the newest up and coming companies trying to compete with the likes of Google and Yahoo for text based advertising. Just recently, Bookmark Bliss was accepted into Text-Link-Ads and as a test, we’ve been playing around with their system. You can see the results in our green toolbar under “Featured Links.” As of this writing, these ads have only been up for a day or so and we currently have no links. The Text-Link-Ads Widget allows you to simply setup in your sidebar a block that is synchronized with the changes you make to your profile at the TLA website. Very convenient and very easy to use for anyone thinking of working with Text-Link-Ads for their site.

WP-Amazon

If your blog deals a lot with products a great source of revenue can come from becoming an Amazon partner and directly marketing Amazon products that you talk about. Users are generally more inclined to make purchases after reading about a particular item and with the WP-Amazon plugin, you can set yourself up for a piece of the commission. What I really like about this plugin is that it integrates entirely into your Wordpress admin tools allowing you to very easily incorporate images, descriptions, and Amazon links directly into posts. WP-Amazon makes it very easy to show your readers exactly what you’re talking about and maximize your potential of converting a sale.

WP-OpenAds

OpenAds is a great tool to help you manage private ad sales entirely on your own. It provides many of the tools made available by large advertising companies and is completely free to download and install. In addition, it’s also really easy to start using right away. If you figured out how to get Wordpress running, you can figure out how to install OpenAds. Although Bookmark Bliss is not currently using OpenAds to manage our private ads, I’ve used OpenAds (aka phpAdsNew) dozens of times for both clients and personal projects and I highly recommend it. Wp-OpenAds is a great little plugin that I’ve tested a few times that allows you to easily configure your blog to run ads generated by the OpenAds system.

Using Post Slug feature to Increase your SERP

Do you use post slug feature in WordPress? If yes, then great! If not, then you should really start using it. Post Slug feature is located among one of those boxes at the right side: Categories, Post Status, Discussion… etc.

SEO Advtantage of Using Post Slug

When you use it, you greatly improve your blog’s SEO. In WordPress, if you enable permalinks and if you use Post Title in the URL structure, then you know that the post title becomes part of the URL for each individual post page.

Below is a screenshot of Permalink’s preferences in WordPress:

As you can see, I have set Date (Year/Month/Date) followed by Post Title for the URL structure.

Feed Search Engines with Different Important Keywords

As you know Search Engines pay more attention to page’s Title, URL, and Headings (or the content in general). So it’s always better if you input important keywords in page’s Title and URL in particular, and to repeat the keywords in the content of the page. Therefore, using Post Slug gives you this advantage of putting different words in the URL of the page.

As you can see from the screenshot below, words that you enter in the Post Slug becomes part of the URL (instead of the Post Title, that is set by default).

So what’s the benefit?

Why did I choose “what is pillar articles” for the URL and not use the post title that was set by default? Because I know that people won’t be searching Google using “Write Pillar Articles but Don’t Overdo It” phrase. I am pretty sure that people will be going for searches like “What is Pillar Articles”, “How to write Pillar Articles”, “Pillar Article Structure” etc. Among these alternatives, I have chosen the first one.

Was it the correct choice? I am quite confident that it was, because if you search Google for “What is Pillar Article“, you will see that my post comes up on No.4 position (at this point in time, it might climb up or go down).

So as you can see, when you use it correctly, the results are very encouraging.

Don’t abuse it

When using this feature you should only use keywords that are directly related and mentioned in your post. Idea here is to let the users find your blog, find the article useful, and become your regular reader. Therefore putting not related keywords in the Post Slug won’t bring you any good. You will just destroy your reputation and credibility.

Do you have to use it for every post? If you can do that, then why not? Personally I do not use it all the time, I only use it on some articles that I think important.

Free WP Theme Verses Paid WP Theme: Missing Components of Free WP Themes

I was using Free WP Theme for a long time for all of my blogs. Then I switched into paid themes and currently I am enjoying the benefits of that decision. So, I decided to share my experience with free wp themes, and how I decided to buy those paid premium themes that I have bought and finally the benefits of paid Wp themes.

Today I will share the major and typical problems that I encountered with Free WP Themes. I will try not to get into too much detailed much here rather I will just give you some high level overview and hopefully you will be able to relate to those typical problems.

Lack of customization on the theme
I bet that you always wanted to have a unique a look in your blog. And you can do that with Free WP themes but then two things has to be true: you know how to code and you have a whole lot of time in your hand. And in that case you are not using your time effectively.

Lack of concentrated support for that theme:
I always had an issue with this. It is always easier to ask someone about something than reading about that and learning it. It will be very rare that you will meet a group of folks who are using the same free WP theme that you are using and you can ask for help.

Lack of updates with the evergreen WP versions
I have experienced this bunch of time. I update the WP version the free theme is not compatible to work with new WP version resulting my site the crash.

Plugin compatibility issue with Free WP themes
This is a fun one. Imagine your site was working perfectly but as days go by it gets slower and weirder. By the time you figure it’s a plugin and your Free WP theme compatibility issue (posting questions to forums, using google and calling hosting tech support) you have already spend a good chunk of time that you can use to improve you blog. I truly hated every time that I went through this particular issue.

Time spend on customizing is too much
After I went through all the above and at the end I had to switch to a different theme for whatever reason, I went through everything one more time. If I think about it now, it was simple a paid.

I do want to understand couple of things. It is beneficial to have free themes at the very beginning for your blog, just like having your first car and then you should work your way up. Using free themes will also allow you to look around more for the type of themes that you are looking for. And best of all its FREE. But think again when you really decided to get into blogging long term. And just in case you want to know, I have used the some magazine style free themes for the longest and then moved forward with Solostream Theme. Any other thoughts??

Elegant Themes New Theme Options Page for ePanel User

Many of you might have been aware of the big change with Elegant Themes recently. It is not of its layout, appearance but it is within its theme panel options. It is now called ePanel with a new appearance which is very eye-catching, well-organized among different options etc.

However, the most important thing that I love the most from ePanel is its SEO tab. Now, you can improve SEO for curtain part of your blog like single post, index page SEO and homepage SEO which many other themes now can not do. Thanks Elegant Themes for this improvement.
