Create Shortcut to Command Prompt with Administrator Rights

If you run command prompt in Windows 7, you might have noticed that by default it runs in user mode and does not have administrator rights. But if you need to specifically execute commands which should run in administrator mode, then you will need to run command prompt in administrator privileges. Although you can choose to right click cmd and select run as administrator, it would be much easier if you create a shortcut to command prompt

1. Right click on the desktop and select New-> Shortcut.

2. In the create shortcut window, enter location as C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe and click on the Next button.

3. Enter a name for the shortcut and click finish.

4. Now go to desktop and right click the new shortcut created and select properties. In the properties window, select the shortcut tab.

5. Click on the advanced button and check the box against Run as administrator.

Click OK and close the properties window and now if you run the shortcut everytime, the command prompt is executed as administrator.

Don’t worry about Windows 7 Black Screen of Death

If you have the symptoms, you can use this utility to fix the issue, but in case your PC is already effected with Black Screen of Death, then follow the process:

Restart your PC
Logon and wait for the black screen to appear
Make sure your PC should be able to connect to the internet (black screen does not appear to affect this)
Press the CTRL, ALT and DEL keys simultaneously
When prompted, Click Start Task Manager
In Task Manager Click on the Application Tab
Next Click New Task
Now enter the command: “C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe” http://info.prevx.com/download.asp?GRAB=BLACKSCREENFIX
Note this command assumes that you are using internet explorer as your browser, or not substitute your browser path and file details for your browser of iexplore.exe or use the Browser option of Task manager to locate it.
Click OK and your browser should start up and begin the download process
When prompted for the download Click run, the black screen fix program will download and run to automatically fix the issue.
Now restart your PC and the black screen problem will hopefully be gone.

Twitter Gadget for Window 7: Tweetz

We have covered various Twitter clients for Windows, now here is another twitter client which is in fact a Windows 7 sidebar gadget. Although Tweetz is a sidebar gadget, it provides you with all the functionality of Twitter like retweet, reply, search etc. It also support for mentions, direct messages and has a built in URL shortener which make it breeze to use. It even does reverse looks up on links so you’ll know where they go before click on them.

To update your status, click anywhere in title area of the gadget near the top. Compose your message including any links. To shorten links, click the “Shorten” button and Tweetz will scan the message for links and shorten them in place. You can also add a sound notification when a new tweet arrives.

Each tweet available in the gadget has an option for replying, retweeting and also adding to favorites. Apart from this, you can also have a compact version of thegadget on the sidebar in case you feel the overall size is big (which is again customizable). Overall we were impressed by this twitter client and if you are already using sidebar gadgets, this is an useful add.

Fix Error Code 0xC004F061 when Activate Windows 7

Now that Windows 7 is available for purchase, people might be doing an upgrade from previous version of Windows or performing a clean install. In case you are using Windows XP, you will need to do a clean install as there is no upgrade option available. You can follow this tutorial if you are upgrading from Windows XP. You can buy either the upgrade pack or the full version of Windows 7. In case you have got the upgrade key and tried to activate Windows 7, you might have got the Error Code 0xC004F061.

This happens because of the following reasons;

You have got a upgrade product key and you have tried to activate it from a clean install.
You tried to upgrade the OS from Vista, but ended up performing a clean install.

If you receive error “0xC004F061″ when trying to activate Windows 7, it means you’re using a product key for an upgrade version of Windows 7 and a previous version of Windows wasn’t on your computer when Windows 7 was installed. To install an upgrade version of Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP must be installed on your computer. If you formatted the drive before starting the installation process, you won’t be able to use the upgrade product key toactivate Windows 7.

To fix this issue, you will need make sure that Windows Vista or Windows XP must is installed on your computer. If you formatted the drive before starting the installation process, you won’t be able to use the upgrade product key toactivate Windows 7.

Use System File Checker (SFC.exe) to Repair Windows 7 System Files

If any of the Windows system files are missing or are corrupted, Windows may not behave as expected. For example, some Windows functions may not work, or Windows may crash. Windows 7, like previous version, has an inbuilt tool called system File Checker tool (SFC.exe) which scans for missing or corrupted system files and repairs them. Using System File Checker tool (SFC.exe), you can determine which file is causing the issue, and then replace the file.

To start System File Checker (SFC.exe), follow the steps below.

1. Open an elevated command prompt, i.e command prompt run as an administrator. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

2. Now type the command sfc /scannow and press enter. The System File Checker will start checking the system.

This process might take some time as it has to scan all the system files for errors.

3. Once the scan is complete it will display the result to inform whether there are any issues with the system files.

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. In case the tool is not able to fix the error, it is better to restore the system to a previous state using System restore.

Use Old Programs on Windows 7

Although most of the programs written for Windows Vista will work properly with Windows 7, there might be some programs only compatible with Windows XP or previous versions. If a program written for an earlier version of Windows doesn’t run correctly on your Windows 7, then you can try changing the compatibility settings for the program, either manually or by using the Program Compatibility troubleshooter. Both these method does the same actions of changing the program to make it compatible.

To use the Program Compatibility troubleshooter, click the Start button and then click the Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under Programs, click Run programs made forprevious versions of Windows.

This will start the Program Compatibility checker, click next.

The tool will check for any issue and list out all the programs installed on Windows 7, select the program which is not working currently and then click next.

In the next step, you can either select recommended settings or still troubleshoot the problem.

In the next step, the tool will apply the recommended settings and you can try starting the application to check if it is working fine with the new settings.

If the application is working fine, click next and save the settings so that application will use the selected settings all the time.

Alternatively you can also do this job by right clicking on the exe file of the program and then making it compatible with previous version of Windows it was designed for.

Upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7

If you are using Windows Vista, then you might be knowing that you can upgrade to Windows 7 directly from the upgrade pack. In Windows 7 if you have already set up a Wireless Network connection, then you can copy this profile and use it on another machine running on Windows 7. You can copy the network settings to USB Flash Drives and then use it on other machines. The way you add a device or computer to your network depends on the type of network adapter and the version of Windows your computer is running. This feature will work on machines running Windows 7, Vista and Windows XP.

1. Click on the network icon in the taskbar and right click on the network profile and select properties.

2. Select the connection tab in the properties window and below you can see the copy settings to USB option.

In Windows 7 you can change wallpapers automatically from a collection after a specified time. If you have selected more than one wallpapers in Windows 7, then you can change desktop wallpaper quickly from the right click menu in Windows 7. For this features, you first need to make sure that either your theme has multiple wallpapers or you have selected multiple wallpapers from a folder.

To do this, right click on the desktop and select “Personalize”. Navigate to desktop backgrounds and select multiple wallpapers, you can also browse for any folder where you have wallpapers.

Once you have selected the wallpapers in desktop background settings, then you can change wallpapers by right click on the desktop. When you have multiple desktop backgrounds set, the right click menu shows an additional option “Next Desktop Background Picture”.
